After being crowned Skyrace champion in Scotland and his first outing on skis in the Cerdanya, Jornet has been proclaimed overall champion in the Migu Run Skyrunner World Series after crossing the line in the Limone Extreme Skyrace in sixth place (3h10’45’’). The last event in the Migu Run Skyrunner World Series, run over 29km and 2,500m of overall ascent, was dominated by Davide Magnini (2h59’24’’), who came first in record time, followed by Rémi Bonnet (3h04’14”) and Oriol Cardona (3h06’07”).

The women’s race was won again by orienteering world champion Tove Alexandersson from Sweden who raced her first skyrunning race here last year. Known to give it her all, today’s win was no different.

“It was so tough for me today. I’ve had a long season with many orienteering competitions so I finished the season last weekend with seven races in four days. I wasn’t sure to come here because I was so destroyed,” said the winner. “When I started I felt terrible but I was just fighting, fighting all the way. I come from Sweden where there was snow and I’m not used to this heat so it was a fight from the start to the finish but now I’m so satisfied that I did it. I really enjoy these challenges and that’s what I love!”  She didn’t beat her own record but finished in 3h31’36”, just 25” short. Ragna Debats closed second, triumphant with her new Overall title. Third was Spaniard Sheila Avilés.

The day was clear, hot and sunny and the race promised to be tough and hard fought. The top-class line-up featured the best of the sport’s present and future with names such as Marco de Gasperi, last year’s winner, Anton Krupricka, Rémì Bonnet, Jan Margarit, Pascal Egli, Zait Ait Malek, Petter Engdahl and Stian Angermund. And from the start in Limone sul Garda the younger runners set the pace.

From the beginning a front group was formed with Magnini, Bonnet and Engdahl, followed by another one of about eight runners where Jornet was located. It is here where the whole race has been placed, staying in the top 10 and finally crossing the finish line in sixth place. “Today I was with the calculator in hand, I knew that if Engdahl won I had to be at least sixth, that’s why I tried to maintain a good pace” said Jornet. This result, plus the points accumulated in the Skyrace Comapedrosa (Andorra), the Trofeo Kima (Italy) and a few weeks ago in the Glen Coe Skyline (Scotland), saw him proclaimed champion in the general ranking of the Migu Run Skyrunner World Series 2018 with more than 400 points. “I’m happy with what I have achieved today and to close like this the skyrunning season, now it’s time to think about the final of the Golden Trail Series in South Africa“, he said.

.

NEXT RACE FOR KILIAN: On October 20 the Jornet will take part in the final of the Golden Trail Series, in South Africa, running The Otter Trail race. And so ends a season that began late thanks to injury but which has finished with great results.
