KILIAN JORNET ADDS TWO NEW WORLD TITLES IN SKI MOUNTANEERING.
A great weekend for Kilian Jornet at the Mondolé Ski Alp (Italy) competition, where he has completed an excellent season in the ski mountaineering World Cup with a double. Having won the vertical race world championship yesterday, today he went on to complete the double by winning the individual category in the Piedmont mountains.
“It’s been a perfect season. I’m really happy with the way it’s gone, to be in front in so many races, winning two championships and and winning at the Pierra Menta and the Altitoy couldn’t be better,” he said.
Jornet has once again shown the form he’s in on a 16.3km circuit that started at the Prato Nevoso ski station and included a 1,920m climb. He led from the start in a hotly contested race with some very technical downhill stretches, along with the German Anton Palzer, while not giving the Italian Michele Bosacci, his closest rival in the overall classification, a chance. The Italian finished eighth while the German came second, 37 seconds behind Jornet. The Italian Matteo Eydallin completed the podium.
Jornet started the last event of the season with every chance of winning his fourth individual world championship following victories at Font Blanca, Transcavallo and Valetellina Orobie and taking second place at the Alpiniski. At the Mondolé Ski Alp Jornet lived up to expectations and this fourth victory shows what great form he is in. This season he has won nine of the ten races he has contested, including the long-distance Pierra Menta and Altitoy.
“This weekend wraps up a season I couldn’t have dreamt of. Now the mountain ski season is over I’ll dedicate myself to mountaineering and climbing,” he said.
This is Jornet’s fourth world championship, having won in 2010, 2011 and 2012, with 480 points in the overall classification, 128 more than Boscacci, second in the overall ranking.
