Skyrunning World Series: Pikes Peak Marathon results & photos. Winners: Kilian Jornet - Emelie Forsberg. Mireia Miró takes 3rd.

The Skyrunning 2012 season visited yesterday one of the great american classic trail runs: The Pike´s Peak Marathon. The race was won by Kilian Jornet  in 3h40 with Alex Nichols coming in second and Max King in third. The women´s race got a full Salomon Running podium with Emelie Forsberg on top, Kasie Enman second and  Mireia Miró third. PIKE´S PEAK MARATHON 2012: RACE SUMMARY. 

Despite much previous media fanfare from the ISF  to the contrary, Matt Carpenter´s 1993  3h16m record stayed more than firm. Still, there were some impressive performances to be enjoyed at Manitou Springs (Colorado) this year, as always.

In the mens field,  Kilian Jornet won the 57^th Pikes Peak Marathon in 3h40’26” followed by new skyrunning star, american Alex Nichols in 3h47’22”. Last man on the podium was Max King, third with 3h50’10”.

 In the women’s field, the race felt at times as a continental transponder of the recent Dolomites skyrace, ending up with the same full Salomon Running podium and in exactly the same order:  Emelie Forsberg  from Sweden won (11^th overall) in 4h28’07” with american Kasie Enman second in 4h28’25” and Spain’s Mireia Mirò, third in 4h32’13”.

 PIKE´S PEAK MARATHON 2012 HIGHLIGHTS.

The men’s race saw a tight group to the summit with Kilian Jornet leading throughout. Local runner Alex Nichols is evidently getting a taste for distance and altitude after excelling in his first SkyMarathon at the recent Skygames in the Spanish Pyrenees with a 5^th position while Max King, after a brilliant 3^rd at Speedgoat, held the pace to close 3^rd. Colorado runner Marshall Thomson took fourth while France’s Greg Vollet and Oscar Casal Mir from Andorra took 5^th and 6^th respectively.

The women’s race was won on the descent.  A downhill specialist, Forsberg was ten minutes behind at the summit and overtook Enman on the last mile to the finish. Both Jornet and Forsberg set new records on the downhill – a natural for seasoned skyrunners.  Mirò’s tendon injury held off and was pleased to have finally concluded a marathon, the first this year.   Michele Suszek from Colorado was 4^th and Britain’s Lauren Jeska, 5^th.

SKYRUNNING 2012 RANKINGS

Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg are now the leaders of  the 2012 Skyrunner World Series ranking.  After just a few days’ rest and training they’ll be ready for the next challenge: the highly technical and gruelling Kima Trophy in Italy on Sunday. There,  Jornet will face strong competition from top runners Tom Owens and Andy Symonds from Great Britain, Michel Lanne from France and Germany’s young Philipp Reiter.
